![]() They quoted a full repair and replacement of the rotted wooden window frame with vinyl keeping the glass and original window size. Today I had a vendor that specializes in rotted or leaking window repair and restoration of wooden window frames. He said most likely the window will need to be replaced and he couldn't repair it. The handyman stated that the rot is on the transom part of the window and he can't repair it. I'm sure in the dead of summer contractors and vendors are busier than normal so I'm having a hard time finding handyman or contractors to take a look at my situation, so here I am re-posting here. The wood frame is all rotted and crumbling. I posted this thread a little over a week ago regarding repairing or replacing one of my windows that is in need of repair. /u/Mmmelanie has a drug-filled hole under house. The Jill Taylor (Most Unfortunate Situation) Award /u/chrislightening and their staked electrical line. How much will it cost? aka Always get 3 Quotes!Īl Borland Award (Best Home Improvement Project) Any links to a website or blog will be removed. The PVC is paintable and does not have the rot issues which wood is known for. The whole piece must be removed and replaced with PVC. We do not recommend just cutting out the bad places and patching it. We always recommend that the rotten wood be removed and replaced with PVC brick mould and sill materials. If the wood had any rot issues when capped it would only make it worse. Wood naturally holds moisture and by capping it with aluminum the wood cannot breath and the moisture starts to decay the wood. The homeowner is not aware of what is going on behind the capping which from the outside usually looks pretty good. However, it causes extensive damage to the home by accelerating the wood rot problems. The practice of capping is a way to add more dollars to the bottom line for the installers and they can cover up the rotten wood around window and doors. We found a lot of rot and as you can see very poor patch work by the previous installers. We explained that if we found any we would replace the whole piece with PVC brick mould and/or sills. Window Replacements of Georgia suggested to the client to remove the aluminum capping to be sure their was not rotten wood on the brick mould and sills. The homeowner bought the home not knowing their was a problem with some of the windows which had been replaced a couple of years before they bought the house. These pictures show what was behind the “capping” around the windows at one of our recent installations. Window Replacements of Georgia prides ourselves in educating our clients on what really goes on during an installation.
